Drawing with… Goya

Goya’s sketches can be satirical, comic, tragic, political, fantastic. These quick vignettes, are masterfully executed and are delightful to copy.

In this session of “Drawing with…” we will copy a few of his pen and ink quick monochromatic sketches that depict funny naughty old witches, people busy performing daily tasks, comical scenes. We will start drawing the scene in pencil, then use brown ink or watercolor washes for the main values and then refine the figures with pen and ink or a thin brush. You can also use this method to create quick compositional and tonal studies for your own artwork.

Materials

  • Lightly toned paper, you can use hot press watercolor paper or good quality drawing paper toned with a light wash of coffee or watercolor to give the paper an aged look. You can also use white paper. I can show you how to tone the paper at he beginning of class, we will start working on another piece of white paper as we wait for the coffee wash to dry.
  • A cup of coffee (no milk or sugar, thank you)
  • A graphite pencil in HB, B or 2B
  • Brown ink or watercolor (sepia, walnut and such)
  • Round, synthetic or sable watercolor brushes, #2 and #8 will do but you can use any water-media brushes you have.
  • A pen and nib, or bamboo pen or just use the thin brush,
  • Sharpener and eraser
