Art Springs:
Time to get out and smell the flowers!
A summer of open air workshops.

More than a year has passed since the start of the Covid pandemic and we are all ready to emerge from our segregation, but we still need to be careful.

“Art Springs” is a series of workshops that will be held outdoors in various Botanical gardens and Nature preserves in the tristate area where we will be able to paint landscapes and flowers in the company of other art and nature lovers, still maintaining safety guidelines that can be more easily observed in an outdoor setting.
The venues selected for these one-day workshops have bathrooms and, in a few cases, a cafeteria for our convenience.

The second workshop will be held the June, 19th at HORTULUS FARM GARDEN AND NURSERY, one of the most celebrated private gardens in America, is known as for its opulence and evocative mix of classical design and modern sensibilities. It has been featured in publications like House & Garden, House Beautiful, and Country Living and the New York Times called it “formal, intimate, and grand.”

Materials

watercolors-icon-2

Watercolors

Watercolor paint in tubes or pans. You can use any watercolor paint you have, but these are the recommended colors: yellow lemon or cadmium yellow light-pale, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium red medium, alizarin crimson, cobalt blue or cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, raw sienna, burnt sienna, black. Blue gray by Old Holland or Lavender by Holbein can also be very useful colors to create sense of atmospheric distance or a gray-cloudy sky.

Brushes

#2, #8 and #14 round synthetic brushes. These brushes are cheap and versatile. If you can afford a Kolinsky sable brush you should buy a #8 round. The best brand is Winsor and Newton but it is very expensive. Raphael or Eskoda make very good quality Kolinsky sable brushes for much less. You also will need a 1” ½ or 2” flat synthetic or natural hair brush for washes.

Paper

a pad of 11”by 14” cold press watercolor paper by Arches, Fabriano or Winsor and Newton. You can also use any paper you like or you already have such as hot press, rag or hand made.

Drawing Accessories

Pencils, colored pencils; Water containers, palette, paper towels; Folding Chair
